I recently managed to finish a portrait, namely that of my late dad. I made the sketch over a year ago and started seriously working on it at the beginning of November, which basically means I was working on it, with more and less intense periods, for more than two months! Not quite as long as Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, but still, it seemed to last ages, especially because my workplace was completely cluttered with paints, brushes, palette and other utensils and thus useless for any other activity. Partly this time-consuming aspect was due to the technique- I used oil on canvas, which I thought I liked because you can repaint a detail as many times you like until you are pleased with the result. The fact of the matter is, sure, you can do that, but you usually have to wait until the paint is reasonably dry before you can apply another layer. Which explains why it lasts so long. Anyway, you can imagine how good it felt when it was finally finished!
And this is the final result: *drumroll*

The colours on this are rather distorted because I am not able to use my camera properly - i.e. I could not capture the exact tonality or whatever. The photos came out much paler than the original. Here, I played around with my photo editing programme a little bit, but it still does not do it justice. It is a shame because colours are something I am particulary fond of in my painting. I guess you'll just have to wait until my exposition to see it in person.:))
Anyway, here are some other ones au naturel, straight from my camera:

As most of you don't know what my father looked like, I am publishing a photo I used as a model for this painting. Do you notice any resemblance? :D
That being said, I think I will change my technique to something more practical for my next portrait(s), like charcoal or maybe even watercolour - these techniques are much faster and less messy (one needs protective garments for oil painting as stains don't come off easily) and will be easier to incorporate into my everyday activities.
I wish you all a lovely Sunday!
Best,
Maruša
